About the Program
Hoʻoulu Waiwai is helping to grow wealth for families by strengthening their personal finances and helping them to achieve their financial goals. Learning opportunities such as culturally relevant financial workshops, incentivized savings accounts, personalized one-on-one coaching, and other events help to build family assets. This translates into increased economic stability for families, which research has shown can positively affect children’s academic and long-term economic outcomes.
Services include a monthly community workshop on a variety of topics related to personal finance; confidential, one-hour sessions with financial coaches who help navigate through life’s financial decisions; the Wai‘anae Financial Fitness Fair, an annual community event in April in celebration of National Financial Literacy Month; Volunteer Income Tax Assistance; Free Application for Federal Student Aid party; and Individual Development Accounts with $4 to $1 match savings to support qualified higher education and business capitalization expenses.
We provide culturally relevant financial workshops, personalized one-on-one coaching, and incentivized savings accounts that help people build family assets.
Education Savings Account (ESA)
Our Education Savings Account Project is a Match Savings or Individual Development Account (IDA) Program for those who are pursuing a degree at an accredited university. Preference is given to those who are pursuing a degree in teaching. Savers save a minimum of $10 a month up to a total of $500 over the course of participation in our program. Upon completion of our program including required Financial Education Workshops and Financial Coaching Sessions, you can receive $4 for every $1 saved, up to a maximum of $2,000 matching funds to be used for qualifying higher education expenses, including tuition, fees, and books.
We offer a minimum of monthly community workshop on a variety of topics related to personal finance.
Financial coaches are available to help navigate through life’s financial decisions. Session are confidential and are typically one hour.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA):
Free tax preparation for eligible families.
Wai’anae Financial Fitness Fair:
Annual community event in celebration of National Financial Literacy Month in April bringing a variety of personal finance resources together to the Wai‘anae community.
