alice-junco-kawakami_largeDr. Alice Junco Kawakami is one of the three founding members of the INPEACE organization. Passionate about strengthening communities, Dr. Kawakami has dedicated her entire life to improving Hawaiʻi’s educational system, specifically in high-need areas in the state, where socioeconomic factors have affected the education of young children. She is the past program director for Kukuluao and Ka Lama Education Academy (KKLEA), INPEACE’s first teacher recruitment program. The goal of KKLEA is to recruit community members to become teachers and serve in their home communities and to support new teachers in the education system. Over the years, KKLEA has built an extensive network of partnerships that continue today. KKLEA has also earned a positive reputation in the community for its innovative and grass roots efforts to improve outcomes for young children.

Dr. Kawakami is a retired professor of education and the former Director of the Hawaiʻi Institute for Educational Partnerships at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Dr. Kawakami holds her PhD in educational psychology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and her MEd in educational psychology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa as well as her BA in psychology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.

Dr. Kawakami has been awarded the Kamehameha Schools Native Hawaiian Educator of the Year 2005 award, along with a travel grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to present ongoing research on indigenous perspectives on educational research and evaluation at the American Evaluation Association (AEA) Annual Conference in Toronto and at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE) in New Zealand.

Dr. Kawakami’s work has been published in more than a dozen journals and books. After spending her entire life in public service, Dr. Kawakami enjoys spending time supporting Hawaiian-Focused Charter Schools and enjoying her family and grandchildren.
