Three Weeks to a Smooth Transition
Going to kindergarten is a major milestone in your child’s life. But, is your keiki ready? Have you done all you can to prepare your child for school? Pualani Murakami says preschool was just too expensive, so she decided to stay home and teach her daughter Kiley the things she would need to know before entering kindergarten. “I just kind of guessed on my own what curriculum in kindergarten would be,” Murakami says. “I just started with the little things. But, then I wish I had known more about what they expected from the students,” she added. Murakami learned about INPEACE’s Keiki Steps to Kindergarten program when she signed Kiley up for kindergarten. The FREE three-week summer program helps ease the transition to kindergarten. Parents and keiki learn what to expect the first day of kindergarten and how to prepare. “It’s awesome,” Murakami says. “It teaches them what circle time is, what is expected of you when you start school and how it’s going to be day-to-day,” Murakami says. Kiley is now in kindergarten and is “loving it,” according to Murakami. Ashley Cruz’s son, Robert, attended Ka Pa‘alana, a traveling preschool. Officials there referred Cruz to Keiki Steps to Kindergarten, to reinforce what she and Robert had already learned. Cruz noticed the difference right away. “Everything he learned in preschool, like I don’t know how to explain it, he does way better. “ Cruz says.” And, the program showed Cruz what she needed to do to help Robert prepare for school. Now he too is thriving in kindergarten. For more information on Keiki Steps to Kindergarten, call 693-7222 or log onto www.inpeace.org.
